I find it interesting that most Fundamental Baptist preachers speak of the evils of going to see a film at the Movie Theater, but have no problem going to the library and checking out the same film.
For most of these extremists this boycott extends to movie rental stores. When you present the argument that not all movies are harmful to watch, the response is usually; “well, we are to abstain from the appearance of evil”. Of course you might be going to see a perfectly wholesome movie at the theater, a weaker brother or potential convert might see you at the theater and assume you are there to watch the sexually explicit R rated film that is also showing at the same theater.
In recent years, evangelism has meant a Church organized “soul-winning” effort in which an open invitation is given to the Church members to meet at a given time to either canvas a residential area with door hangers and tracts, or to go door to door to make personal contacts and share the good news of the gospel. However it is performed, it seems that the Churches have taken on the burden of making sure the community is evangelized. Some Christians recognize the personal responsibility to evangelize, and set aside personal time for themselves to make visits, or to hand out tracts. But is this really what evangelism is? Does evangelism mean to just simply tell others about Christ? I don’t think so… I believe there is more to it than simply ‘preaching the gospel’.
Since this is the first post of this blog, I suppose an introduction is in order. My name is John Hardin. I am the webmaster of this site, and several other sites including those linked to from Gideon’ s Sword. I am also the webmaster and author of the articles found at http://www.gideonsword.net/WordPress/.
This blog is intended to be an avenue to preach the “whole truth” of God. Many of the teachings we find today are tinged with, or adulterated with false teachings, or the traditions of men. What is needed today is the truth of God to be taught without fear of persecution from those who adhere to these traditions and false teachings.
Although I do not intend to be offensive to anyone, no doubt the ensuing posts on this blog will find me under criticism even by those whom I consider of like faith. But, change is not usually taken easily when we as sinful men can be so full of pride. I personally have been there. I know what it is like to struggle with portions of scripture because the Word of God was persuading me of the truth, but my pride contended with the truth for fear of being ostracized by my peers.
In a sense, maybe this blog site is an act of liberation for me personally to publicly post the teachings I have been persuaded of by the Holy Spirit, without fear of what retribution may ensue.
